Mapping measles and COVID reaps rewards
Measles award 2 1

A Total Healthcare/Tāmaki Health measles campaign won the Spark Excellence in information technology award at the inaugural New Zealand Primary Healthcare Awards in February.

Our novel use of IT-generated “heat maps” to identify areas of measles contagion led to outstanding vaccination uptake within the practice network.

In the thick of Auckland’s measles outbreak last year, 1,700 priority patients were identified and vaccinated over a five-week period.

“Using the Power Business Intelligence tool, our IT team were able to turn patient data into heat maps to show the location of measles cases in practice populations, as well as the location of all unvaccinated patients,” says Total Healthcare general manager Kate Moodabe. “This information was produced daily.”

“Tāmaki Health’s 39 Auckland practices were then able to combine this real time data with information within its network-wide patient management system to contact people to come in for vaccinations.”

The technology, developed by our IT engineers Samir Ranchhod and Vijay Mohandoss, was used in combination with Medtech Evolution that is available to and used by all Tāmaki Health clinics.
